Billington Stays Cool

12-Nov-07
There must be a lot of truth in the fact that it’s cool to work at Billington Structures these days as Billington, who supplied the structural steelwork for the Indoor Ski Slope at Castleford, for the Xscape development, have just secured the steelwork contract for the next phase of the cold store buildings at Boroughbridge, just off the A1. Spanning a lengthy 67 metres the roof trusses will have to be tandem lifted (see photo) into the structure due to the sheer size and weight of the steel truss framework.

The single span trusses weighed in at 14 tonnes each and span a mind stretching 67 metres. The depth of the truss at the apex is an amazing 5 metres. However the building is so large that when the trusses are hoisted into the roof section, the sheer scale of the project makes them look quite small and ordinary. The building envelopes a new extension to the UK’s largest, retail foods cold store, at the Reed Boardall Group’s National Distribution Centre at Boroughbridge, North Yorkshire. Some of the largest Chillers in the UK will be installed to cope with the internal temperature requirements which just goes to show, this will be another cool project from Billington. Main Contractor on the project is Marshall Construction.
