Our commercial portfolio has grown considerably since the turn of the millennium; we have completed various developments throughout the UK. Our ability to provide a full structural package including metal decking and precast floors and stairs along with new developments and innovations such as Bi-Steel cores for lift shafts has seen Billington rise to prominence in the commercial market.

The SAGE headquarters in Newcastle stands out as one of our most challenging projects. Picking up the pieces from a previous failed structural steelwork contractor, Billington were able to turn around the fortunes of a rapidly declining project and deliver the steel package to a tight budget and newly revised programme to the great satisfaction of the client and main contractor.

When Amec (now Morgan Ashurst) turned to Billington to complete the City Square Government offices in Newcastle, Billington took up the challenge and delivered the project on time and to budget. The City Centre site could have provided Billington with a host of city centre complexity but with the correct mix of 3D modelling and just in time delivery; the steelwork was delivered and erected with time to spare.

Sitting above a subway tunnel in Liverpool some finite engineering was introduced to support one corner of Shepherd Construction’s City Square building on a heavy transfer truss system weighing in excess of 400 tonnes. The largest section weighed 53 tonnes and included 2 solid steel blocks that weighed 5.5 tonnes each. The splice plates had to be positioned by cranes, the largest splice plate weighed 583 kg and 12.5 tonnes of fittings were used to hold the transfer structure together. Tension control bolts, 30mm diameter and 200mm long, were used for assembly; the minor fasteners were not the sort of bolts you could carry in your shirt pocket. The truss had to be assembled in 24 pieces and access wells were positioned in the basement floor so that the splices could be reached from the underside for bolting and fixing. Another complex commercial structure by Billington.

From just two or three floors to hi-rise multi storey structures Billington can provide the structural steelwork and accompanying packages for any commercial development, greenfield, brownfield or city centre with retained fascades.
