Billington Structures Project Wins Structural Steel Design Award!

The Derby Multi-Sports Arena

Billington Structures is proud to announce that one of its projects, The Derby Multi-Sports Arena, has won a 2015 Structural Steel Design Award.

The awards evening took place in London on 1st July, where we were announced as winners for the project based in Derby. The Structural Steel Design Awards are very competitive and highly sought after, so it is fantastic news to receive the deserved recognition for a truly unusual but uniquely designed building. This was an enjoyable project as it was out of the ordinary and is just one example of the scale/range of steelwork design and structure Billingtons are able to produce.

Derby's iconic multi-sports arena is a key legacy project that draws on sporting enthusiasm following the 2012 Olympics. The first new-build velodrome constructed in England since the London Olympics, the iconic 14,500m2 building, located next to Pride Park Football Stadium, features a 250m Siberian timber Olympic sized velodrome track.

Construction work began in May 2013. Working on behalf of main contractor Bowmer & Kirkland, Billington Structures were responsible for the overall design, fabrication and erection of the structural steelwork. Arup, as engineers, were responsible for the initial concept design during development phase (up until stage D) and Billington produced the detailed steelwork design for the project. The arena opened earlier this year.
